Frequently asked

Questions we hear often.

Do I need a State or Central FSSAI licence?

+

The licence tier depends on turnover and nature of operations. Basic registration applies if turnover is below ₹12 lakh. A State licence is required for turnover between ₹12 lakh and ₹20 crore. A Central licence is needed above ₹20 crore, or for import/export, all-India operations, or dairy/meat processing units.

How long does FSSAI registration take?

+

Basic registration typically takes 7 days. State licences take 30–45 days with inspection. Central licences take 60–90 days and may involve a physical inspection by FSSAI officials.

What happens if a food business operates without FSSAI registration?

+

Operating without registration is a violation under Section 63 of the FSS Act, attracting imprisonment of up to 6 months and a fine of up to ₹5 lakh. Selling unsafe or substandard food carries higher penalties including cancellation of licence.
